Kiara didn’t stick around the Dal for long. In fact, she only had one drink. Before anyone could even realize she was there, she was gone again. She knew where she wanted to be more than anywhere, and she knew just how to get there. The road was long, and Kiara gave up about halfway there, doing something she would have never done in another situation. She turned into smoke right where she stood, allowing herself to drift where she needed to be. When she solidified again, she was standing in a familiar kitchen. The large white room was welcoming and homey; but at the same time, she felt like she could drown. The house that was normally so alive with sound was empty. Which meant only one thing. He was gone. Of course he was. Kiara could remember when Sonny bought the house. She had chastised him for his choice, considering that he was never home long enough to actually spend time there.
She walked through the empty house, fingers trailing lightly along the walls as she remembered every little nook and cranny. She walked up the stairs, and down the narrow hallway. She could almost hear the sound of music being created in the very walls of the house. She pushed open the door to Sonny’s bedroom, smiling to herself when she realized that it was just how it had been left last time she was there. But that was enough to make the emotions flow. Some things never changed. That was the one thing that she was sure of in life. She had accepted that Sonny was her brother, that she had a family. The Moore’s were where she was meant to be. But this was another aspect altogether. The tears rolled down her face as she stepped into the room, shutting the door behind her and slumping down against the wall.
Kiara tugged her phone out of her pocket, searching through her contacts for the one that she was still desperately searching for. “Pick up… Please pick up…” She whimpered as she held the phone to her ear.
“Kiara!” Sonny’s voice on the other end was what she wanted to hear, but the last thing she had actually expected, and Kiara almost dropped her phone from how much the sound had startled her. “What’s up?”
“Sonny…” She said quietly, trying to hide the emotion in her voice. Though she was sure that she failed miserably.
If frowns could be heard, Kiara was sure that Sonny was frowning, “You alright?”
“No.”
“Short, sweet, and to the point. What’s wrong?”
Kiara was quiet for a long moment, she picked at the carpet as she tried to think of how to answer, “You’re not my brother….”
The sound at the other end wasn’t what Kiara expected and she pulled the phone away from her ear to look at it with a confused gaze even if Sonny couldn’t see her. He was laughing. “Hang on dawg.” He had to be talking to someone else. She heard movement, followed by a door shutting. “Kiara.”
“What?”
Sonny’s voice was soft but comforting, while being a pointed tone, “I’m an alien, man. I’m literally from another fucking planet. You’re human. Or you were–”
“No I’m not.” She interrupted his explanation and heard Sonny sigh.
“You’re not an alien. You’re from this planet. And you’re having a crisis ‘cause we’re not related? Man…. Kiara, think about that for a second.”
Kiara’s face fell as she realized that for once in Sonny’s life, he was right. She nodded a little, sighing in defeat. “But you’re the only family I’ve ever really known–”
It was her turn to be interrupted. “How’d you get that wake up call, man?” Sonny asked, “Not tryin’ to be rude yo, but seriously?”
“Trick.” Kiara answered simply. When Sonny didn’t reply right away, she elaborated. “Trick found some stuff on Louis–”
“Peter Pan?”
“That’s the one.”
“That’s what’s up.”
“Can I continue?”
“Yeah, yeah, sorry.”
“Trick found some stuff on Louis, 'cause he wanted to know where he was from and shit, I guess.” She explained, “And apparently, he’s half elf and was given up when he was born. Come to find out, the same parents that gave him up… Are my real parents.” There was silence at the other end of the line and Kiara had to look at her phone once again, this time to make sure that it didn’t go dead. “Sonny?”
“Let me get this straight.” Sonny paused, thinking over what he had just been told, “You’re Peter Pan’s sister…. And that’s a bad thing?”
Kiara had to laugh at that. Of course Sonny would be the one to see the good there. He had always been a fan of Peter Pan and anything that didn’t involve growing up. “You’re dumb.”
“No seriously yo. What’s wrong with this? I don’t get it. You and Louis are tight yeah?”
“Yeah…”
“Everyone knew you couldn’t actually be related to me, yeah?”
“Yeah…”
“So what’s wrong?”
That was what Kiara needed. Even though he had asked that once before, the flood gates opened. “Everything. For years, my life was shit. I lived on the streets, I hid from my adopted parents who were supposed to be looking out for me. I didn’t even know who I really was. Then you come into my life, and suddenly I have a family again. And now I’m being told that the family I thought I had isn’t my family? It hurts.”
Sonny didn’t reply immediately, and Kiara couldn’t blame him. She was kind of glad that he was quiet though, because she was trying to fight back tears again. “But that’s all in the past man.” Sonny’s voice startled her again, “You’ve got the best thing in the world going for you right now. You have a real brother. Someone you click with. Someone that will actually be around - you’re marrying his bandmate. ’S'not like he can get away from you.”
Kiara didn’t reply.
“Promise me something, Ki?”
That one she could reply to, because the response to that had ben the same since Sonny had waltzed into her life, “Anything.”
“Give it a shot. Be open minded and see what can come out of it? Hell, he’s THE lost boy. For all you know, this could get legit.”
Another sigh escaped Kiara’s lips and she nodded, “Okay.” That was all she could say, and they both fell silent. The only sound that could be heard was that of Kiara getting to her feet and crossing the room. She crawled into Sonny’s bed, pushing her boots off before curling into a little ball. “Sonny?”
“Hmmm?”
“I’m staying at your place for the night okay?”
“That’s chill.”
“Sonny?”
“Yeah?”
“Sing for me?”
And without hesitation, like he had since the day that they met, Sonny did. The sounds of the song that had soothed Kiara so many times met her ears, and even if Sonny’s voice was a little raspier than it once had been, even if the song sounded different than she was used to, it was what she needed to hear. By the end of the song, she was sound asleep, having vowed that when she could catch him in a free moment, she would talk to Louis again. This time open minded. Just like she had promised.
